Aston Villa given clarity over NSWE’s missed end-of-window financial boost in £6m update

Aston Villa were unable to sanction Rory Wilson’s exit in the final stages of the winter market.

The Villans had a busy month of dealings, most notably welcoming Tammy Abraham back to Villa Park as well as signing Douglas Luiz on loan until the end of the campaign.

Unai Emery was after multiple signings, but knew that NSWE were going to be slightly limited as to what they could spend in the window, due to Profit and Sustainability Rules.

The exit of Wilson was one that Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris seemed to be keen to finalise, and with good reason.

Aston Villa could have banked £6m from Rory Wilson sale

Wilson is highly rated for his performances in Villa’s youth setup and has even cemented himself as a regular for Scotland’s U21s and U19s sides.

The striker has yet to play his first match at senior level, and the winter window was an opportunity for the 20-year-old to take the next step in his career.

Wilson was in talks to sign for Hoffenheim, and things were progressing with the Bundesliga outfit, at least between the two clubs.

Jacob Tanswell reported for The Athletic on Tuesday that Aston Villa were indeed prepared to let Wilson leave on loan, in a deal that saw Hoffenheim retain a buy option in the region of £6million.

Despite the Villans being open to the move, the Scot was unable to agree on personal terms with the German outfit.

It’s possible that there was a disagreement over his playing time, which is why the young forward was seeking a B6 exit in the first place.

The next steps for Wilson at Aston Villa

This news means that Wilson will stay at Villa for now, unless a team from leagues such as Turkey, the Netherlands or Portugal, to name a few, comes in for the number nine.

Some markets are still open in Europe and further across the globe, which means Aston Villa could yet make a sale.

Rory Wilson Aston Villa stats

Wilson has been tearing up defences for Villa’s youth teams ever since he joined the club from Rangers’ academy in 2022.

Although NSWE wouldn’t have banked the suggested £6m immediately anyway, they will now have confidence that Wilson is someone they can rely on to make them some additional cash in the future.

The Villans will now sit back and hope that an eligible side comes in for Wilson in the next few days, or that the attacker can keep performing at Bodymoor Heath.
