Unai Emery is currently managing a significant squad rotation as Aston Villa enter the decisive stretch of a top-five race and a high-stakes Europa League semi-final with Nottingham Forest. While the first team has shown remarkable resilience, the long-term loss of midfield pair Boubacar Kamara and Youri Tielemans had stretched resources thin at a critical juncture, though the Belgian is flying again. The successful return of John McGinn to the starting XI also provided a massive boost. With a crucial run of fixtures on the horizon, the early return of Jadon Sancho is another positive piece of news.

Boubacar Kamara and Alysson have been nursing injuries, while Amadou Onana suffered a fresh injury setback in the 1-0 first-leg defeat to Nottingham Forest, having passed a late fitness test to be ready for the game.

Emery has confirmed Onana has undergone a scan and will definitely sit out the Tottenham match, with his participation against Forest next week now likely to be in doubt.

Ross Barkley was ineligible for the Forest match but is in contention to face Tottenham Hotspur.

Position Primary Option Backup / Rotational
Goalkeeper Emi Martinez Marco Bizot, Oliwier Zych
Right-Back Matty Cash Lamare Bogarde, Andres Garcia
Right Centre-Back Ezri Konsa Victor Lindelof, Diego Carlos
Left Centre-Back Pau Torres Tyrone Mings
Left-Back Ian Maatsen Lucas Digne
Defensive Mid (Pivot) Amadou Onana Boubacar Kamara
Central Mid (Pivot) Douglas Luiz Ross Barkley, Youri Tielemans

Left Attacking Mid Morgan Rogers Jadon Sancho, Emi Buendia
Centre-Forward Ollie Watkins Tammy Abraham, Evann Guessand
Tactical Note: Emery’s reliance on a narrow box midfield makes the roles of McGinn and Rogers vital for central overloads. The arrival of Tammy Abraham has provided a physical “Plan B” to Watkins, allowing Villa to switch to a dual-striker system when chasing games.
