Ex-Aston Villa manager second favourite to bag Middlesbrough job amid Rob Edwards’ impending exit

Steven Gerrard is currently the second favourite to take over at Middlesbrough, with Rob Edwards looking set to take over at Wolves.

The former Aston Villa manager has been out of work since January when he left Al-Ettifaq.

However, the Liverpool legend has not managed in the UK since 2022, when Gerrard was sacked as Villa manager after a dreadful start to the season.

Now, as he continues to search for a new management role, the bookies have tipped the 45-year-old to take over at the Riverside Stadium.

Steven Gerrard and Tony Mowbray favourites to take over at Middlesbrough

While Edwards is still officially the manager of Middlesbrough, he looks all but set to leave in the coming days.

Edwards has been heavily linked to Wolves since they sacked Vitor Pereira, and now Boro have agreed terms with the Old Gold side, subject to completion of the relevant paperwork.

As a result, it appears that Boro will now be in need of a new manager, with BetVictor on 8 November making Gerrard the joint second favourite for the role at 5/1 alongside Gary O’Neil.

The current favourite is Tony Mowbray at 5/4 in what would be a sensational return for the Boro legend.

Gerrard has been picky about his next club

Despite being linked to numerous jobs in 2025, the former Villa manager is yet to land a role.

Gerrard was heavily linked to Rangers in October before he turned down the opportunity, despite having previous success at Ibrox.

However, if Middlesbrough are considering the Liverpool legend for the role, it would be a great opportunity for the 45-year-old.

Boro are currently second in the Championship after their 2-1 victory over Birmingham on Saturday, putting them in a great position to win promotion.
