‘Poor’ Evann Guessand comes under fire again at Aston Villa after what happened vs Sunderland

Evann Guessand hasn’t covered himself in glory once again in an Aston Villa shirt.

Guessand signed for Villa from OGC Nice in the summer but has so far failed to live up to expectations under the tutelage of Unai Emery.

This saw Guessand come under pressure in the Brentford clash after what was a largely frustrating performance from the Ivory Coast international.

Villa lost on penalties to Brentford, with the 24-year-old already off the field, but he failed to showcase his best throughout his 80-minute cameo.

It is fair to say that Guessand didn’t rediscover his touch in the opening exchanges against Sunderland in what was yet another disappointing showing.

Evann Guessand missed a golden chance vs Sunderland

Having failed to score a goal in any of their first four Premier League games, the Villans would have been hopeful of finding the net at the Stadium of Light.

If it wasn’t for summer signing from Liverpool, Harvey Elliott, the claret and blue outfit wouldn’t have a single goal to speak of in all competitions.

As a result, there were high hopes when travelling up north that the Ivorian could make the difference against the Championship play-off winners.

That certainly wasn’t the case in the end, with Guessand actually scuppering Villa in the first half with a missed chance from barely over six yards out.

Sunderland keeper Robin Roefs kept it out, but former shot-stopper Paul Robinson believes that the Dutchman shouldn’t have been given a chance.

Speaking via BBC Radio 5 Live on 21 September, he said: “It was a decent save, a straightforward block, and then it falls to Watkins, who, in turn, was offside. It’s a poor effort from Guessand.”

Evann Guessand simply must improve for Aston Villa

There is no getting away from the fact that the versatile forward so far looks like a waste of precious funds that Villa really didn’t have in the summer.

If you’re going to bring in an attacker for big money, they need to make some sort of positive impact immediately, something that Guessand hasn’t done.

He is very raw and does certainly have qualities which could prove to be very useful in the future, but right now, he has been unable to show that consistently.

It will certainly be interesting to see if he can turn it round, but right now he’s surrounded by struggle in claret and blue.
