How much money Aston Villa could save from Jacob Ramsey exit as Newcastle close in
Newcastle United are close to completing the signing of Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey.
West Ham and Nottingham Forest have also registered their interest in the 24-year-old this summer, but Ramsey has made it clear that a move to St James’ Park is his priority.
Villa had attempted to agree a new contract with the midfielder, who made 29 Premier League appearances for Unai Emery’s side last season.
But negotiations have ultimately proved fruitless, with Ramsey keen for a fresh start in the North East.

Villa will save more than £7million from Jacob Ramsey exit
According to Fabrizio Romano (12 August), Newcastle are set to pay £40million for Ramsey, with the deal in its closing stages.
As an academy product, the 24-year-old’s sale will represent pure profit for the Villans in relation to the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
And Ramsey’s departure should free up some room on the wage bill too, saving Villa money that would have been paid over the course of his contract.
- Player: Jacob Ramsey
- Contract expiration: June 30, 2027
- Weekly wage: £70,000
- Yearly wage: £3,640,000
According to Capology, the contract signed by Ramsey in 2022 was worth £70,000 per week – which would have seen him earn £7.28m over the two years it had remaining.
Whilst that additional saving can not be attributed to the overall transfer fee, it is another positive from the deal which will undoubtedly encourage decision-makers at Villa Park in the remaining weeks of the window.
Villa to go big in the closing weeks of the transfer window
Villa have struggled against PSR constraints all summer, having signed just two players so far.
Up until last week, the Villans had spent just £3m on goalkeeper Marco Bizot, but Evann Guessand’s £27m arrival from Nice marked their first major piece of expenditure.
And fans can expect more to follow in the closing weeks of the window, after Ramsey’s departure is confirmed.
Aston Villa | 2025/26 |
Spent | £30m |
Received (including Ramsey) | £43.5m |
The sale’s status at pure profit will create significant wiggle room within the PSR boundaries, allowing Villa to open the, undoubtedly packed, coffers.
A replacement for Ramsey will surely be sought first of all, with a centre-back and a midfielder also among the likely positions of interest for Emery.
