Aston Villa and Newcastle open talks over Ramsey transfer compromise before showdown

Aston Villa and Newcastle have both endured frustrating transfer windows ahead of facing each other on the opening day of the Premier League season.

Newcastle pipped Villa to a Champions League spot at the end of last season, but it has not helped them conduct business in the transfer market.

Alexander Isak is pushing for a move away, while Newcastle have also been frustrated over some of their targets rejecting their interest.

Aston Villa also had a slow start to the window, but have now signed striker Evann Guessand, and the two clubs could now do business together before their upcoming clash.

Newcastle interested in Jacob Ramsey

Jacob Ramsey faces an uncertain future at Villa, and several clubs have registered an interest in the midfielder this summer.

West Ham and Nottingham Forest were reportedly keen on signing him, but it recently emerged that Villa have offered a new contract to the 24-year-old.

Nothing has been signed yet though, and it now appears that Newcastle are eager to recruit him in the coming weeks.

Aston Villa will face Newcastle on the opening day

The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Newcastle and Villa are beginning talks over a potential deal, with Ramsey a priority target for Eddie Howe.

The meeting on Sunday could see Ramsey play against his potential future club, but if talks advance before then, he could be left out of the team.

Villa could benefit from Ramsey sale

Although talented, Ramsey fell down the pecking order last season and made just 19 Premier League starts, and with two years left on his deal, there needs to be a resolution.

As a homegrown player, a big money sale would greatly boost Villa’s PSR situation, and this could allow them to invest in another attacking player as a replacement.

It appears that Villa would be happy with whatever Ramsey decides to do, and if he wants to stay at the club, a new contract would also benefit Unai Emery.

Emery was determined to keep hold of Youri Tielemans despite interest, but after losing Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio and potentially Ollie Watkins, he may wish to keep Ramsey at the club to maintain some continuity.
