Mateo Retegui stance on Aston Villa transfer mooted amid £45m update

Aston Villa have been linked with a move for Atalanta striker Mateo Retegui.

That is according to CaughtOffside (28 December), who report that Retegui could be signed as a potential replacement for Jhon Duran, who could look to quit Villa Park.

Atalanta aren’t keen on selling Retegui, who is also a target for Juventus, Napoli and Roma, but could be convinced to part ways with the 25-year-old for around £45million.

However, ex-Villa scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – isn’t sure that Retegui himself would be interested in joining Unai Emery’s side.

“That is a lot of money,” King said.

“However, would Villa perhaps want to sign this player to keep Ollie Watkins and Duran on their toes? He seems to be a bit of a star in Italy, especially if he has scored that many goals. Therefore, if he is brought in, it would certainly strengthen Villa, who have a lot of work to do this season.”

“Having said that, I wouldn’t think Retegui would be too happy about the move, knowing that if he is brought to the club, he would likely be third choice.”

Mateo Retegui to refuse transfer to Aston Villa?

It is hard to see why any striker would be interested in a move to Villa right now.

That is perhaps the position where Emery has the most quality, with Duran and Watkins battling it out for the number one position, while Louie Barry could also burst onto the scene, especially after recent stunning footage emerged of the 21-year-old.

In addition, it wouldn’t make a lot of sense for Villa to spend £45m on a position which doesn’t need any strengthening.

However, if Duran or Watkins were to quit the club, then Retegui could emerge as a suitable replacement.
