Aston Villa to replace Douglas Luiz with Amadou Onana as PSR claim emerges

Bryan King believes Everton midfielder Amadou Onana could be brought in as a replacement for Douglas Luiz at Aston Villa.

The ex-Villa scout claims Unai Emery’s side must ensure they keep their spending in line with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules this summer.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano via X (19 June), talks are continuing for Luiz to join Juventus.

According to the Times (14 June), Villa have made an approach to Everton for Onana, with the Toffees holding out for a £50million fee for the Belgian.

However, King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – believes the club need to be careful this summer.

“Onana could be brought in as a replacement for Luiz,” King said.

“They’re in the UEFA Champions League, and that will always attract players. This is the calibre of player Villa need to be looking at.

“However, it seems that Villa are going to be spending quite a bit of money this summer, and they need to make sure they adhere to the PSR rules.”

Will Amadou Onana replace Douglas Luiz at Aston Villa?

Onana could certainly act as a suitable replacement for Luiz.

While it could be debated whether he is at the same level as the Brazillian, Villa supporters will need to accept that finding a like-for-like replacement for Luiz will be difficult.

However, Onana is young and therefore has time to develop into a top player under Emery at Villa Park.

Whether or not the Villains can afford to sign him this summer is a different question altogether.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano via X (19 June), the club are closing in on the signing of Ian Maatsen from Chelsea for £37.5million.

Therefore, if they were then to go and spend another £50million or so on Onana without making any substantial player sales they might be at risk of overspending.

As a result, this will need to be taken into consideration. However, one way or another, Luiz will need replacing.
