Aston Villa secure more bottom-line profit as transfer exit advances already

Aston Villa are set to generate more bottom-line profit after it emerged they are close to agreeing on an exit for Tim Iroegbunam, according to Dan Plumley.

Everton are in advanced talks to sign the Villa midfielder [The Athletic, 18 June], who has found himself out of Unai Emery’s plans at Villa Park with new additions expected this summer too.

When asked if the deal is helpful to their PSR situation, with the club expected to be forced to make sales before June 30, football finance expert Plumley admitted that clubs are now exploiting the fact that selling academy players adds extra profit to the bottom line of their accounts.

It does and that’s another consequence of regulation,” he exclusively told Villa News.

“Clubs have looked to boost their numbers in a way that’s perfectly acceptable so it does create that one club starts to do it and then the bigger clubs are better placed to do it and have more opportunity to do it, so you can understand it.

“But a lot of it is more down to the financial regulations than it is the actual player’s development and that player moving on. It’s because you can generate more bottom-line profit from that particular player.

“So it is absolutely something we need to be aware of at the minute and a lot of it is happening because of the regulatory framework as well.”

Aston Villa set for win-win deal in Tim Iroegbunam transfer

In a summer where Emery is desperate to strengthen the squad to ensure Aston Villa are prepared for Champions League football, some ruthless decisions will need to be made.

Douglas Luiz looks set to move on in a swap deal involving two arrivals from Juventus to help the club with their financial situation, but a deal for Iroegbunam is one that is certainly more favourable for the Villans.

Everton are in talks to sign Tim Iroegbunam.

The 20-year-old had minimal game time at Villa Park in the 2023/24 season and if the Toffees are willing to pay eight-figures to take him to Goodison Park then it’s a brilliant deal to do.

He’s not in the manager’s plans and losing him won’t weaken the squad at all, and the club are likely to strengthen in that area of the pitch anyway.

Fans may be unhappy to see a young talent move on, but in the grand scheme of things it is a deal that makes a lot of sense for where the club want to go and it should lead to more exciting things.
