Aston Villa close in on Pau Torres transfer with £55m update
Aston Villa are closing in on a deal to bring Villarreal’s Pau Torres to the club this summer, as the defender has a £55million release clause in his contract, according to 90min.
The Spain international has been linked to superstar clubs Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Juventus, and Napoli this summer, but 90min state that Villa’s “trump card” is Unai Emery, who worked with Torres during his time at Villarreal.
Reports suggest that Torres has made his intention to leave Spain clear to his club, and that the Premier League is his preferred destination, and that Aston Villa are the furthest advanced in any deal.
Despite the release clause, Villa would be looking to do a deal with Villarreal to pay a fee in instalments, rather than as one lump sum.
Bring him in
This would be a brilliant deal for Aston Villa. You only need to look at the calibre of clubs Torres has been linked to in recent weeks, with Fabrizio Romano most recently linking the Spaniard to Bayern Munich.
Torres is a superstar defender, one which Villa are in need of with Diego Carlos playing just three games last season. While Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa are good options, neither have the star power or international acclaim of Villarreal’s defender.
Emery has made his intentions clear this summer, following Aston Villa’s Europa Conference League qualification, with the manager looking to make improvements across the squad with star players – having already been linked to Marco Asensio and Nico Williams.
The ex-Villarreal boss, as well as new director of football Monchi, are proving to be ambitious in the transfer market as they look to improve their squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League and European campaigns.
