Widely regarded as one of the best goalkeeper in the world, Martinez – or Dibu as he is affectionately known – is an elite shot-stopper, with exceptional distribution. His ability to remain calm under the high press allows Villa to build from the back with confidence.
Physical Presence
Martinez can dominate his penalty area with immense physical presence, is comfortable claiming crosses, and is a master in one-on-one situations. In more recent times, concentration has been an issue.
Psychological Edge
Martinez is a master of the mental game. His leadership from the back and excellent penalty-saving record provide a psychological boost to the squad and a daunting challenge for opponents.
Emi Martinez: Aston Villa’s maverick genius
Emi Martinez has become one of the all-time greatest Aston Villa goalkeepers since moving to Villa Park from Arsenal back in 2020. The now 33-year-old is a two-time Yashin Trophy winner during his time at the club, helped largely by the fact he is a World Cup and Copa America winner with Argentina. While he was seemingly keen on a move to Manchester United in the summer of 2025, Martinez remains a firm fans’ favourite and will forever be acknowledged as one of the best, if not the best, goalkeeper to ever don the gloves in a Villa shirt.
