Unai Emery: His Aston Villa journey
Aston Villa fans could have been forgiven for having reservations when Unai Emery was announced as Steven Gerrard’s successor back in October 2022. The Spaniard had an excellent reputation, particularly in LaLiga, but his difficult spell at Arsenal had some wondering if he could cut it in the Premier League. But boy has he won the hearts of the Villans faithful, turning the club in perennial contenders for Champions League football, and employed an exciting brand of football at Villa Park. Right now, the only thing really missing from the CV is a trophy, something that would really cement his legacy among the all-time great Villa managers.
Unai Emery’s road to Aston Villa
Emery is widely heralded as one of the best coaches in the world and certainly Villa supporters would back up that assertion. Prior to his arrival at Villa Park, Emery has held roles with Almeria, Valencia, Sevilla, and Villarreal in his native Spain. Additionally, he had a two-season stay with PSG in Ligue 1, and was, of course, Arsene Wenger’s replacement at Arsenal. Things may not have worked out at Emirates Stadium, but he has done a fantastic job in rebuilding his standing at Villarreal and now Villa.
Unai Emery career achievements
Emery is the absolute master of the Europa League and no manager can top the four titles he has won in Europe’s secondary competition, winning three in a row with Sevilla and another with Villarreal. He also finished as runner-up with Arsenal in 2019, and remains in contention to win the tournament with Villa this season. At PSG, he won a Ligue 1, Coupe de France, and Coupe de Ligue treble in 2017-18. There is a reason, he is regarded as one of the best coaches in world football.
