1982 European Cup final, Bayern Munich v Aston Villa
Arguably the biggest night in the history of Aston Villa came in 1982 as Tony Barton guided his side to European Cup glory in Rotterdam.
After Saunders quit half way through the season due to a lack of available funds, the assistant was given the chance to lead his side dor the remainder of the season.
It is fair to say that he was a success as he oversaw a win against the Bundesliga giants thanks to a Peter Withe goal with 67 minutes on the clock.
This saw the Villans become only the fourth English club to win the European Cup with the famous commentary of the winning goal being forever embedded in the club’s history.
“Shaw, Williams prepared to venture down left. There’s a great ball played in for Tony Morley. It must be. It is! Peter Withe!”

Aston Villa’s other trophies
The Villans have also won a raft of other honours throughout the years, including multiple League Cups and the Intertoto Cup.
The most recent success came against Derby County in the Championship playoffs in 2019 as Dean Smith’s side earned a place in the Premier League.
