Unai Emery has the new Morgan Rogers right under his nose at Aston Villa

Alysson shares some very similar numbers and traits to Morgan Rogers from his time in Brazil, as Aston Villa may have a cunning succession plan up their sleeves.

Whenever the time comes for Rogers to leave Aston Villa, his £16million total package move from Middlesbrough in the winter of 2024 will go down as one of the best pieces of business in recent Villans history.

Villa can reportedly expect to bank anywhere from £80-100m for the England international if they were to sell this summer, which can’t be ruled out at all right now.

The 23-year-old would bring in a huge cash injection to help with their ongoing battle to stay in the financial good books, and will of course see the football club turn a massive profit on him.

However, whilst many might expect Aston Villa to dip into the transfer market to find his successor, Alysson’s exploits in Brazil show some clear similarities to the traits Rogers brings to this Villans side.

How are Alysson and Morgan Rogers similar?

Alysson’s Aston Villa future has already been questioned, after the 20-year-old was excluded from Unai Emery‘s Europa League squad and only turned out three times in the Premier League for them last season.

The versatile winger was a surprise purchase from Brazilian giants Gremio last December, moving to Villa Park in a deal worth a reported £10.5m.

Having only played 47 minutes of football for Villa since joining, his sample size from his time in the West Midlands so far hasn’t been large enough for supporters to really see what they’ve got in him.

But, when you look at what he was able to do in Brazil, where he played 42 times for Gremio, it becomes clear that the youngster is rather alike Rogers in a number of ways.

As per FotMob, Alysson registered a shot accuracy of 50 per cent in Brazil’s Serie A in 2025, whilst also averaging 1.35 shots, 0.10 assists, 1.77 successful dribbles and 0.73 blocks per 90 respectively.

Meanwhile, in those same categories during the 2025-26 Premier League season, Rogers averaged a 55 per cent shot accuracy, took 1.59 shots per game, provided 0.16 assists, completed 1.15 successful dribbles and 0.71 blocks respectively.

Not only are those underlying numbers very similar, but the two forwards also share a close physical profile too.

Alysson stands at six-feet tall with Rogers 6’2″ respectively, both players are two-footed with the ball at their feet, whilst they share the same love and ability for dribbling and powerful ball-carrying.

So, as Alysson grows into the English game and is handed more opportunities, he should only draw even closer and possibly even surpass Rogers in a host of these underlying areas that they’re already similar in.

Alysson can help Aston Villa do what the best teams do

Why do the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool – despite the odd season here and there – consistently find themselves competing at the top of the Premier League?

Money, naturally, plays a big part in that, but having cash to splash is only a benefit to a football club if they know how and where to spend it, and those sides do.

Whenever those teams lose a big player, they always seem to have a replacement ready to go, whether that be through a player they’ve brought in and developed, or an academy talent that’s been nurtured for a first-team succession.

Aston Villa may not be able to compete with those clubs financially, but they can by way of shrewd recruitment, and so being able to sign and mould players like Alysson to the shape of a current senior star provides them with a sustainable production line.

Players like Rogers are almost impossible to find on the open market to replace him that way, so what better way to re-install his traits and talents into the side than by constructing another version of him?

If you were to watch the two side-by-side, the way they both move and look is almost scarily similar to one another.

After all, Villa are in possession of his instruction manual, and so it seems like too good of an opportunity not to try and mould Alysson into his 2.0 model, especially when they’re so closely matched in certain traits.
