Tommi O’Reilly has chance to secure Republic of Ireland call-up after impressing away from Aston Villa

Tommi O’Reilly is being monitored by the Republic of Ireland for a possible first-ever senior team call-up after impressing on loan away from Aston Villa this season.

The Irishman has been in fine form for Crewe Alexandra this season, earning a clean sweep of the League Two side’s individual awards.

Villa loaned O’Reilly out for the season in what was his fourth stint away from the club, and by far the most successful one at that.

The 22-year-old played all 46 games for Crewe this term, and finally had a loan spell where he was a regular starter for his team.

O’Reilly is now being monitored by Ireland, as his return to Bodymoor Heath this summer will give Unai Emery a chance to take a look at the youth prospect.

Tommi O’Reilly would deserve international call-up

O’Reilly has been linked with a move to Portsmouth following his standout campaign, and it would be no surprise to see the Villans cash in on the youngster.

The right winger has racked up 20 goal contributions with Crewe Alexandra in all competitions this season, and his underlying statistics prove that he deserves a call-up to the Ireland senior team, regardless of the division he played in this season.

O’Reilly in League Two this season

O’Reilly has played 3699 minutes in League Two this season, scoring seven times and registering 11 assists, finishing as the joint-top assister of the division.

He has an average dribble success of 39.3 per cent and creates 1.51 chances per 90 minutes, while also chipping in at the back with 121 defensive contributions.

O’Reilly has an average FotMob rating of 6.93 for the season, and looks destined to kick on next campaign, wherever he is playing his football.

The loanee has only played one senior game for Villa, which came in the Europa Conference League during the 2023-24 season, and could make an impression on Emery this summer.

What’s the latest on O’Reilly’s future?

Portsmouth remain interested in O’Reilly, as do Petererborough.

However, Peterborough Today have reported that Villa may have backtracked on their initial decision to send the forward out on loan to a higher division, and want to sell him this summer.

The fee the Villans could sell O’Reilly for is £1million, with the likes of Bolton Wanderers, Huddersfield Town and Oxford United also keen on a permanent deal.

O’Reilly has made 87 appearances at the senior level, and the player may now be seeking a place to call his permanent home.
