Aston Villa have won the most points of any Premier League side this season after going behind in a match.

With the adrenaline of an unforgettable Europa League semi-final night at Villa Park still coursing through the veins, Unai Emery took his side to Turf Moor on Sunday.

Champions League qualification via the Premier League still hasn’t been secured, but a visit to the already-relegated Burnley looked a prime opportunity to all but wrap that up.

However, their Claret rivals were in no mood to roll over for the Villans, and put up a spirited fight that saw them bring Emery’s men crashing back down to earth.

Villa’s 2-2 draw with Burnley wasn’t the result the B6 boys were hoping nor expected to settle for, but amid the disappointment, it did shine a light on why they’re the Premier League’s best when pegged back.

Emery is known for his team’s comeback ability, with his sides having been involved in numerous come-from-behind wins throughout his managerial career.

Indeed, he’s enjoyed many days doing exactly that during his Villa Park reign, however, his Villa team haven’t been so good at it in recent weeks.

In each of their last four games they’ve gone behind in, Villa have been able to pick up just the solitary point, and that was against Burnley last time out.

That begs the question then, has Emery’s ability to coach his side back into a game when losing abandoned him?

Well, the answer to that question is no, and it’s a definitive no as well.

Villa have trailed in a single game on 19 occasions, but have still been able to collect six wins and two draws from those situations.

Sunderland are the closest to them with 19 points, before a sizeable gap starts to open up to the rest of the league, with Bournemouth third on 16 points, whilst Man United and Brighton are fourth and fifth respectively with 15.

No team has won more times from losing positions than Villa’s six, whilst on the flip side, Newcastle United are the worst team for points won from losing positions, with only three picked up from the 17 times they’ve trailed in a game.

Villa’s comeback ability could be huge in final games

It’s a department that no team wants to have to specialise in an ideal world, but the ability to fight back and claim results after going behind is such an integral element in any successful team.

What it also does is show just how much character is in this Aston Villa team, whilst also highlighting Emery’s quality when it comes to making in-game tactical tweaks.

And, with their final two Premier League games being against Liverpool and Manchester City, as well as the Europa League final against Freiburg respectively, this comeback ability could be vital in the coming weeks.

It’s quite probable that Villa will go behind in one or two of those matches, and with so much set to be on the line, particularly in Istanbul, being able to respond to in-game adversity could make all the difference for them.
