Aston Villa shouldn’t fear Burnley hangover as Premier League records prove
Aston Villa have only lost once to Burnley in the Premier League since 2021.
As much as many may not wish to, Aston Villa attentions must now turn back to their Premier League run-in following Thursday night’s unforgettable Europa League experience.
Indeed, Unai Emery‘s side swept aside Nottingham Forest with ease as they punched their ticket to the Europa League final in Istanbul.
A date with European destiny now awaits the Villans on 20 May, where they will clash with German Bundesliga outfit Freiburg.
However, a trip to Burnley is next on Villa’s agenda, which, respectfully, might not be as exciting nor bring the same glamour of their upcoming excursion to Istanbul, but it’s a mightily important game in Villa’s season.

What is Aston Villa’s Premier League record vs Burnley?
With only three games left to play this season, Aston Villa are on the verge of cementing their place in the Champions League for 2026-27.
However, their final two games of the campaign see them play Liverpool and Manchester City respectively, both of which are sides who are more than capable of beating them.
| Burnley’s 25-26 PL stats | Result |
| Open play goals | 23 |
| Set-piece goals | 7 |
| Expected goals (xG) | 29.5 |
| Goals conceded per game | 2.0 |
| Average possession | 41.9% |
| Clean sheets | 4 |
That’s why taking the already relegated Burnley seriously on Sunday is hugely important, and so long as they do, the history books show why Villa shouldn’t have any fears over getting a fright in Lancashire.
In the last five Premier League meetings between the two teams, Aston Villa have won four and drawn one, with Burnley’s last top-flight win over the Villans coming in January 2021.
These two claret and blue teams have clashed 13 times in the Premier League era, with the first not being until 2009.
During that time, Burnley have only ever beaten Villa twice, once in that aforementioned win in January 2021, whilst their other came in May 2015.
Aston Villa have won their last three-straight top-flight games against the Clarets, with two of those victories seeing them put three past Burnley.
Emery isn’t expected to rotate against Burnley, and armed with the history books on his and Aston Villa’s side, there shouldn’t be any cause for concern about the possibility of slipping on this potential banana skin match.
What has Burnley’s home record been like this season?
Burnley haven’t enjoyed their return to Premier League football this season, and their focus will have already shifted towards a Championship promotion push in 2026-27.
However, with nothing much left to play for other than pride, it’s these kind of teams that can prove very dangerous, as they can play without any real pressure nor expectation, and could give Villa a real good go as such.
Burnley haven’t been able to make Turf Moor a fortress this term, however, winning just two of their 17 league games on home soil, drawing five and losing 10 times respectively.
They haven’t won at home in the league since their 2-0 victory over Leeds United on 18 October 2025, and considering they went unbeaten in 23 Championship home games last season, this year has been quite the contrast for them.
