Jaden Philogene: Ex-Aston Villa talent playing significant role in Ipswich’s promotion push

Jaden Philogene has played a key role for Ipswich Town this season, as the former Aston Villa academy graduate shines at Portman Road.

Philogene signed for Aston Villa in January 2018, joining from the London-based Pro:Direct Academy after failing to earn deals with numerous EFL sides previously.

He went straight into Villa’s academy system as a result, and his exploits at youth level soon began to see his name linked with some top clubs across European football.

Eventually though, Villa signed him to a professional contract in February 2021, but was only granted a handful of first-team chances at Villa Park over the following years.

So, when it came to the 2025 January transfer window and with Aston Villa playing time limited, Philogene was ready to seek a new permanent home away from B6 where he could really begin to kickstart his senior career.

How has Jaden Philogene fared for Ipswich Town this season?

Philogene was reportedly unhappy at Aston Villa upon the point of his January 2025 exit, with Ipswich presenting a can’t-refuse offer that was understood to have been worth around £20million.

He’d already proven himself at Championship level during loan spells with the likes of Hull and Cardiff City previously, but Portman Road offered him the chance to settle down somewhere, and get his career going again.

That’s precisely what he’s been able to achieve with the Tractor Boys in 2025-26, making 32 total appearances from which he’s scored 11 goals and provided two assists respectively.

31 of those outings have been in the Championship, as have 10 of his goals and both of his two assists, contributing significantly to Ipswich’s promotion push as such.

Kieran McKenna’s side are currently sitting second in the second tier table, with a game in hand over all of their remaining promotion rivals.

As per Sofascore, Philogene has enjoyed three team of the week inclusions, averaged 0.3 goals per game, plays 0.8 key passes per game and has an 83 per cent pass success rate, which is very good for a creative forward player.

He’s also recorded 3.5 ball recoveries per match, won 1.1 tackles per game, made zero errors leading to opposition shots or goals and has been caught offside just 0.3 times per 90 this season.

Philogene has scored a number of superb goals for Ipswich this season too, which has helped to quickly earn himself a place among the hearts of the Tractor Boys faithful.

Villa could accommodate Philogene in current team

So, should Ipswich’s promotion push indeed prove successful in the coming weeks, then Philogene will be set to return to Villa Park next season with a point to prove.

That would be that he’s good enough to play at the top flight level, and he’ll be hoping to put in performances that say to Villa chiefs: ‘you should’ve given me more time and opportunities’.

In truth, looking at Unai Emery‘s options out wide currently, Philogene would have a very good chance of carving out a sizeable enough role in the West Midlands this term.

Philogene is predominantly a left winger, with Emery having the likes of Morgan Rogers, John McGinn, Jadon Sancho and Emi Buendia to pick from there.

However, McGinn is playing really well on the right, Rogers is just as comfortable through the middle as he is on the left, Buendia is inconsistent and Sancho has been a major disappointment this term, respectfully.

So, at the very least, Philogene would surely fancy himself to get ahead of Sancho and Buendia in the pecking order, and that would land him a place on the bench as a priority substitute.
