Aston Villa: John McGinn’s contract examined after summer transfer interest
Aston Villa continue to rely on the heroics of John McGinn.
The Scotland international is one of the best players in the history of the B6 club at this stage after eight years in claret and blue.
After signing for a nominal fee from Hibernian in 2018, the midfielder has seen it all at Villa Park, from the Championship to the Champions League.
He has raised his level every year and remains a key cog in the machine as part of Unai Emery’s squad in the Midlands.
That didn’t stop McGinn from being linked with a move away from Aston Villa last summer, as we now assess what we know about his current contract.
🚨 VILLA TRANSFER UPDATE 🚨
The latest breaking news on active deals, signings, departures, contracts and primary targets.
What is John McGinn’s contract situation at Aston Villa?
It is becoming a dying art, and it is near impossible nowadays to sign a player and get so many years of service out of them.
Villa have been excellent at exactly that over the years, with the Scot just one example of that in the past 10 years in B6.
| Player | Year signed | Appearances |
| John McGinn | 2018 | 320 |
| Tyrone Mings | 2019 | 205 |
| Ezri Konsa | 2019 | 278 |
| Emi Martinez | 2020 | 247 |
| Matty Cash | 2020 | 219 |
| Ollie Watkins | 2020 | 268 |
McGinn has been a virtual ever-present since his move from Hibs and has proven to be worth his transfer fee hundreds of times over.
That excellence was repaid in November when he put pen to paper on a new contract to keep him at Villa Park until the summer of 2028.
Reports suggest that he will be paid £130,000 per week as part of that deal, earning a yearly salary in the region of £6.7million.
McGinn has recently returned from injury for Villa and has provided a boost, so keeping hold of him for many years to come is of paramount importance.
McGinn was previously linked with Everton and Newcastle United
There has never been any real sign that the midfielder could depart the Midlands, other than a brief period under Steven Gerrard.
The start of his captaincy didn’t start as hoped, but since returning to the starting XI he has been simply excellent.
That made it all the more surprising when Everton and Newcastle both moved to sign McGinn last summer.
David Moyes was particularly keen to bring his fellow countryman to Merseyside, but a deal was never welcomed by the Villans.
McGinn remains an important figure at Villa Park, and no supporter will ever want to see him move on unless he decides to retire.
