Morgan Rogers: Aston Villa must get maximum fee in potential summer sale due to Middlesbrough sell-on
Morgan Rogers is set for a summer of major transfer interest in his services, but Aston Villa will know that Middlesbrough are waiting to bank some of the cash from any sale too.
The 23-year-old has once again been in excellent form for Aston Villa this season, with eight goals and five assists from 31 Premier League games.
As a result, the versatile attacking midfielder looks certain of a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup.
Signed from Middlesbrough in the winter window of 2024 in a deal worth up to a reported £15million, Rogers has evolved into one of the biggest bargain buys in the Premier League since his Villa Park move.
However, Aston Villa’s financial situation in regards to PSR and UEFA, combined with Rogers establishing himself as an elite player in the top flight, Villa could be ready to cash in this summer.

What is Middlesbrough’s sell-on for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers?
Villa reportedly want around £100m for Rogers if they were to sell this summer, potentially rivalling Jack Grealish’s then-British record move to Man City for that exact fee in 2021.
Whether that’s a realistic asking price that anyone is going to be prepared to meet, we’ll have to wait and see, but there’s certainly a host of top sides circling his signature.
| Rogers’ 25-26 Premier League stats | Result |
| Team of the week | 3 |
| Goal conversion | 11% |
| Big chances created | 10 |
| Pass accuracy | 76% |
| Key passes per game | 1.3 |
Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United have all been credited with an interest in the England international, with Villa potentially looking to get a bidding war going this summer.
That would be in their best interest too if they are indeed planning on selling him, as they know that Middlesbrough will take a significant slice of the transfer fee pie.
As detailed in a report from BirminghamLive, Middlesbrough were shrewdly able to insert a 20 per cent sell-on fee in the deal that sent him from the Riverside Stadium to Villa Park.

Meaning, should Villa sell Rogers for £100m, Boro would take home £20m, which would still mean the Villans turn a huge profit on him, but that’s still a sizeable amount of cash to lose as well.
Villa risk undoing Premier League progress with Rogers sale
It’s the cruel double-edged nature of having top players: you don’t want to sell them, but you also struggle to turn down potential £100m offers.
Rogers is instrumental to Aston Villa, with his powerful and progressive ball-carrying ability so often seeing him instigating and driving attacks.
There aren’t too many players like him in world football, and even fewer that would be available on the market for Villa to snatch up.

So, replacing him would be extremely difficult, perhaps even impossible, and would risk the Club somewhat hitting the reset button given how influential of a player he would be to lose.
It may well come down to do Villa think they’ve got enough talent and financial capability at their disposal to cope with a Rogers sale this summer, and not massively risk undoing their project of building into a Premier League powerhouse.
