Aston Villa will surely receive £21.7m Donyell Malen fee as Roma transfer clauses revealed

Roma are reportedly expected to turn Donyell Malen’s loan deal from Aston Villa into a permanent one.

According to an X post from Fabrizio Romano on Monday, Aston Villa will receive a €25million euro/£21.7m fee if the deal becomes a permanent one.

Romano states that the Serie A side will have an obligation to buy Malen if they finish in either one of a Champions League or Europa League spot this season, and if he plays in 50 per cent of Roma’s games between now and the end of 2025-26.

It’s also stated that Villa hold a 10 per cent sell-on fee in Malen’s contract, potentially setting them up for a further cash injection on the Netherlands international in the future.

How likely is it Donyell Malen’s permanent terms happen?

After making 29 total appearances for Aston Villa in all competitions this season and scoring seven goals, Malen made it clear he wasn’t happy with his role at Villa Park.

The 27-year-old wanted to see more playing time as a lead striker, however, Unai Emery tended to favour deploying him out wide this term.

As such, it became clear that a change of scenery was required for him this winter, and when Italian giants Roma came calling, it was a no-brainer for him.

And so far, he’s well and truly delivering the goods in Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, having scored five goals from five Serie A appearances so far.

As detailed in the above graphic from Sofascore, Malen is being uber-clinical in front of goal for Roma, converting 62.5 per cent of his big chances and averaging a goal every 78 minutes.

He’s also been getting his wish to play as a centre-forward too, as he’s lead the Roma line in each of his five league outings so far.

Because of that, he looks certain to meet the 50 per cent appearances requirement to turn the deal permanent, so long as he stays injury-free.

So, how likely are Roma to hold up their end of the bargain in terms of where they finish in Serie A?

Well, currently the side from the Italian capital are sitting fourth in Serie A, which is the final Champions League spot, but Juventus are just one point behind them in fifth.

Fifth spot is the only Europa League place available in Serie A, with the sixth-placed team – currently Atalanta – taking a Conference League spot.

Luckily for the terms of this agreement, Atalanta are five points behind Roma as things stand with 13 games to play, and so Malen’s side look well-placed to secure at least a Europa League finish.

Malen could sell Villa short if his current form continues

It’s fair to say that Malen is ripping up Serie A football since making the move to Roma, and looks to already be establishing himself as a top striker in that league.

At 27 and a full Dutch international, he’s still very much in the prime of his career too, and so his transfer value will only keep increasing if he continues to shine.

Therefore, £21.7m may look like an absolute snip for Roma if his current form largely continues throughout the rest of the season, and could set the Italians up to make a considerable profit on him too in the future.

So, whilst Aston Villa will probably still be hoping the terms of the agreement are fulfilled, they may just be wondering whether they could feel short-changed on Malen this summer.
