Unai Emery makes Oscar Mingueza request as Aston Villa consideration already made
Aston Villa want to sign Oscar Mingueza from Celta Vigo.
Despite a recent lack of form, Aston Villa look likely to be back in the Champions League next season, and in order to compete, more arrivals will be needed.
A report from Fichajes states that the Villans have lined up a deal for Mingueza, with Unai Emery having personally requested that a move be made.
Mingueza is a centre-back by trade, but his versatility has been one of the defining factors behind the interest from several Premier League and European clubs.
It’s also added that Celta Vigo are already resigned to his exit in the summer, having impressed throughout his time in LaLiga.
What is Aston Villa’s plan with Oscar Mingueza?
Only Arsenal and Manchester City have a better defensive record than Aston Villa this season, with just 27 goals conceded from 26 games.
The Gunners have conceded 18, while Pep Guardiola’s side have conceded 24.
So, for the Villans to be lining up a deal for another defender may seem strange, but in their eyes, they are lining up a midfielder.
The report states that Villa are considering him for a role in the middle of the park, which would certainly put his versatility to the test.
- Centre-back – 86 appearances
- Right-back – 75 appearances
- Right midfield – 33 appearances
- Left-back – 22 appearances
As demonstrated above, most of Mingueza‘s career has been spent at the back, and only on one occasion has he played in a central role.

With that said, Emery loves a versatile player, and having already showcased his ability to help a player transition into a new position, he would no doubt be keen to do it again.
Aston Villa would benefit massively from Mingueza arrival, here’s why
Given the quality that Villa have in their midfield with the likes of Boubacar Kamara and Douglas Luiz, Mingueza would do well to get in there.
However, to even have that as an option showcases why it would be a great addition.
Matty Cash is another nailed-on starter for the Villans, though the options after him are weak, and with right-back being Mingueza’s second-most played position, it makes sense.
He would add a lot of quality to an already competitive team and ensure that Emery always has options in the event of injuries.
