Matty Cash latest as 11 players could miss out in Aston Villa vs Newcastle

Aston Villa take on Newcastle United in the FA Cup, with Unai Emery being dealt a new injury blow regarding Matty Cash.

The Polish international sustained a knee injury ahead of Brighton at the weekend, and Cash will be unavailable against Newcastle.

Emery confirmed the injury blow in his pre-match press conference, stating he had “enough players” to replace those out injured, including Cash.

It is a big blow for the Spanish manager, as his side will want to go one step closer to the FA Cup trophy compared to last season.

Villa were one game away from the FA Cup final, but eventual winners Crystal Palace handed them a bitter loss at Wembley in the semi-finals.

Emery will have to continue on without Cash, but he’ll have other absences too.

Who else could miss Aston Villa vs Newcastle?

In terms of other injuries, Emery will still be without the longer-term absences of Boubacar Kamara, Youri Tielemans and John McGinn.

Fullback Andres Garcia is still sidelined, with his injury return set for next week.

For the opposition, they have been dealt a new blow, with Bruno Guimaraes picking up a hamstring injury in their 2-1 win against Tottenham.

Eddie Howe says they are “awaiting the full extent”, but even if it is better than feared, he would likely not be risked against Aston Villa.

Lewis Miley could return to action, with Howe saying it is a day-by-day decision with the 19-year-old. The game at Villa Park also comes too soon for Joelinton.

Who will replace Matty Cash?

With Cash ruled out, Lamare Bogarde is the likely man to take his place. The Dutch defender stepped into the right-back role as Aston Villa beat Brighton 1-0.

Bogarde has played plenty this season for the Villans, but he has rarely started in Emery’s starting lineups, with just seven of his 21 appearances in the Premier League being from the first whistle.

However, most of those games have also come in central midfield rather than in defence.

Bogarde stats

The 22-year-old did start the previous cup tie against Tottenham in that midfield role, but he will be looking to impress on the wide right of defence.

In the dugout, Emery will be wanting to secure his 100th win as Aston Villa manager and, in the process, move one step closer to a piece of silverware.
