Emi Martinez exit from Aston Villa becomes serious as meeting plans leaked

Emi Martinez’s Aston Villa future remains up in the air.

The goalkeeper was heavily linked with a move away from Villa Park last summer, before he was reintegrated into Unai Emery’s side, after missing Aston Villa’s clash with Crystal Palace before the deadline.

Martinez joined the West Midlands club from Arsenal in 2020 and has played an integral role as Villa have progressed under Emery in recent years, becoming a consistent Champions League challenger.

Sitting third in the Premier League, Emery’s men are looking to reclaim a spot in Europe’s biggest competition after a year away, while Villa are also aiming for a deep run in the Europa League.

Despite this, the future of Martinez remains in the balance, and fresh reports from Argentina indicate that an exit could be on the cards this summer.

Emi Martinez exit could be on the cards this summer for Aston Villa

After a series of loan spells limited Martinez to just 38 appearances for Arsenal, he has gone on to make 237 in between the sticks for Villa, keeping 77 clean sheets in the process.

Argentine outlet El Intransigente report that there are efforts behind the scenes at Inter Milan, with a “very positive meeting” between representatives and the club leaked, regarding the possibility of the 33-year-old making a move to the club this summer.

This comes from journalist German Garcia Grova, who suggests that a move is being “seriously considered,” with the future of current Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer also in doubt.

Quotes from the outlet mention: “The idea is to start chatting to see if in June, after the 2026 World Cup, it can happen.

“They met Monday and Tuesday to consider the opportunity for Martinez to reinforce Inter.”

Inter are eight points clear at the top of the Serie A standings, with Sommer keeping 12 clean sheets.

Though at 37, a move away from San Siro could be on the cards for the Swiss shotstopper this summer, prompting a move for Martinez.

Why Martinez may be tempted by new challenge

While the speculation surrounding his future left a sour taste in the mouths of Villa supporters last summer, Martinez will always be remembered fondly at Villa Park.

After a career in which he failed to make a real name for himself, the Argentine has developed into one of the world’s best in the Midlands, even being crowned as the world’s number one following his 2022 World Cup win.

With more appearances for Villa than any of his previous clubs combined, Martinez has found a perfect home at the club.

At 33, he may feel as if a fresh challenge is in order. And if that is the case, he will always be remembered fondly at Villa Park.
