Chris Sutton reveals whether Aston Villa will equal 111-year record vs Chelsea

Aston Villa could equal an 111-year-old record as they take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.

Unai Emery’s side are on red-hot form, and currently sit third in the Premier League, just three points behind table-topping Arsenal.

Aston Villa are still outsiders for the title, but the fact that they are even in the conversation is a credit to their recent run of results.

As the Midlands outfit travel to West London on 27 December, they will surely be aware that they are on the brink of making some club history.

Aston Villa on brink of history vs Chelsea

The numbers surrounding Aston Villa’s recent run of form are nothing short of remarkable.

Emery’s side have now won 16 of their last 18 games across all competitions, as well as 11 of their last 12 in the Premier League.

The Midlands outfit scored just once across their first five top-flight matches of the season, but since then, they have found the net at a rate of 2.16 goals per game.

Most impressively, though, Villa are on a run of 10 consecutive wins in all competitions, with their last defeat coming against Liverpool back at the start of November.

If they manage to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, then they will equal their club record of 11 victories in a row, a feat which they have achieved twice before, in 1914 and 1887.

However, Emery’s side are being tipped to finally come unstuck in West London.

Could Chelsea end Aston Villa’s run?

Many expected Chelsea to be the team challenging Arsenal and Manchester City for the Premier League title, but the Blues are seven points behind Villa as it stands.

Enzo Maresca’s side have struggled for consistency this season, although there is no doubting the talent within their ranks.

Villa will be acutely aware that Chelsea can really hurt them with their millions of talent and potentially bring their winning run to an end.

Former Premier League winner Chris Sutton believes the West London outfit have what it takes to secure all three points on Saturday.

In his weekly BBC Sport prediction column, Sutton has tipped Chelsea to beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

He said: “Chelsea showed their resilience when they fought back from 2-0 down to draw with Newcastle, and I can see them digging in again here, to end Villa’s winning run.”

Sutton is clearly no longer backing Emery or the Villans after Christmas.
