Morgan Rogers could join elite list of two Aston Villa players with Chelsea heroics in store

Morgan Rogers could match yet another Aston Villa record against Chelsea on Saturday.

Rogers has scored four goals in his last two games, with superb braces coming against both West Ham and Man United in recent weeks.

Aston Villa’s 2-1 win over Man United on Sunday has them keeping pace with league leaders Arsenal, and the former Middlesbrough man has been their star player during the Villans’ 10-match winning run in all competitions.

Up next for Villa and Rogers is a trip to Stamford Bridge, and if the former Middlesbrough man nets another couple of goals, he would achieve something that hasn’t been done for 27 years.

Rogers’ slow start to the season led to doubts over his potential place in the England squad, but now he looks set to start at the 2026 World Cup.

Rogers has been ruthless in front of goal and is arguably the best player in the Premier League right now, and his initial £8million fee from Middlesbrough is looking like one of the best transfers in the last few seasons.

The 23-year-old has been directly involved in more Premier League goals than any other English player across the opening 17 matchdays this season (10 – seven goals, three assists).

And he could become the third Villan to net two-or-more goals in three consecutive appearances in the competition after Dean Saunders (1992) and Dion Dublin (1998).

Morgan Rogers’ record at Aston Villa

According to FotMob, he has created 16 chances in the top flight and registered 67 touches in the opposition box.

Villa have beaten Chelsea in two of their last four trips to Stamford Bridge, and there is little doubt among fans that their winning run can’t continue.

The area Chelsea are badly struggling in

The Blues have been fantastic at times this season, although despite their hard work in midfield, they lack a cutting edge up front.

Enzo Fernández has created more chances from open play (24) and made more passes breaking the opponent’s defensive line (17) than any other Chelsea player in the Premier League this season.

Chelsea’s top scorers in the league this season have netted just five goals (Pedro Neto and Joao Pedro).

After 17 games of a Premier League campaign, only on three occasions has Chelsea’s top scorer – or scorers – netted fewer at this stage. That was four in 2022-23 and 1995-96, and three in 2015-16.

Enzo Maresca’s side have already lost at home to Brighton and Sunderland this season, and they’ll need to take their chances if they want to become the first team to beat Aston Villa since 1 November.
