Aston Villa on track to surpass stunning Premier League record held by Chelsea

Aston Villa fans couldn’t have asked to be in a much better position on Christmas Day following a run of 10 wins on the bounce.

On Sunday, Aston Villa clinched a 2-1 victory over Manchester United to keep hot on the heels of Arsenal and Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

A sensational Morgan Rogers brace dragged Unai Emery’s men to victory for the second weekend running, and the 23-year-old will be looking to produce more magic when Villa travel to Chelsea on Saturday.

The Villans have a chance to open up a 10-point buffer between them and Enzo Maresca’s side with all three points, while moving closer to a competition record.

Aston Villa can break Chelsea’s record for long-range goals

In an era where intricacy and walking the ball into the net has dominated, Emery has found success by encouraging his players to shoot from range.

Villa have scored the most goals outside the box of any Premier League team this term, with Bournemouth posing as their biggest challengers.

According to Opta Analyst, almost 15 per cent of goals are being scored from outside the penalty area in the top-flight, at a rate of 0.42 per game.

Of course, Villa have contributed heavily to that average, and they’re on track to beat Chelsea’s record of 23 goals from outside of the box (2006/07).

In a tightly anticipated contest at Stamford Bridge, Emery’s men could use their lethal weapon to destruct the Blues and boost their Premier League title chances.

Aston Villa defying expected goal metrics

Aston Villa have been transformed into one of the division’s most ruthless teams, and their ability to score all types of goals makes them a nightmare for the opposition.

Unsurprisingly, a high volume of their goals coming from outside the penalty means they’ve outperformed their xG by 5.73, as per Understat.

Only Tottenham (6.97) have beaten the Midlands side for that metric, and for as long as they keep up their rate of returns, Villa can prove Wayne Rooney’s title prediction wrong.

The former Manchester United striker claims there is ‘no chance’ they will challenge Arsenal and Manchester City for first position.

However, if they beat Chelsea and then Arsenal on December 30, surely Rooney will eat his words and accept the trophy could head to B6 come May.
