Aston Villa January transfer window guide: Who Unai Emery could sign, who could be sold and deadline day explained

Aston Villa could look to change their squad after a superb first half of the season.

The Villans are sitting firmly third in the Premier League after Villa beat Manchester United 2-1 to send themselves seven points clear of Chelsea in fourth.

Morgan Rogers has been a true star for Villa and has helped Unai Emery’s side to rise up the division after a frustrating start to the season.

The likes of John McGinn, Boubacar Kamara, Youri Tielemans and Matty Cash have also caught the eye for Villa in a sensational run at Villa Park.

That doesn’t look likely to stop the claret and blue outfit from making changes in January to help boost a potential title charge.

When the January transfer window opens and closes

Villa have faced PSR problems in recent windows, but will be hoping to at least make some changes once the January window opens.

There are just days remaining until the window opens, with Christmas Day marking a week until transfer silly season begins on 1 January.

The winter market will provide clubs across the Premier League with an opportunity to conduct business for 32 days.

The transfer window closes on Monday, 2 February at 7pm, with the deadline pushed back by two days because 31 January falls on a Saturday.

Aston Villa’s January transfer targets

Emery already looks to have a done deal in the pipeline, with Alysson set to sign from Gremio once the window opens.

The Brazilian teenager will undergo medical tests ahead of the window opening with a view to completing a January switch.

The Villans will hope that the winger won’t be alone in a Midlands switch, with various other stars linked at this early stage.

Brennan Johnson has emerged as another attacking target as his departure from Tottenham looks set to be agreed in the coming weeks.

Crystal Palace are also interested, but with the B6 outfit in a title race, they could represent a more attractive option this winter.

Marc Andre Ter Stegen has also been named as a player of interest, but the Villans have shut down rumours, and a move feels increasingly unlikely at this stage.

Who Unai Emery could sell before deadline day

Emery won’t want to lose many players from his squad in January as he looks to maintain his side’s electric form.

Various players have been linked away, with Pau Torres the latest to be subject to transfer interest elsewhere.

Barcelona have been named in reports involving the centre-back, although a bid is yet to come in from the Catalan giants at this stage.

Harvey Elliott could be on his way out of the Midlands, but it remains unclear where the loanee could go after a nightmare spell in claret and blue.

There may prove to be moves in the pipeline for the likes of Ross Barkley and Andres Garcia due to a lack of gametime, but that feels unlikely right now.

It will certainly be interesting to see how Emery assesses his squad and what the state of play will be come the 2 February deadline.
