Wayne Rooney right on the mark with Morgan Rogers comments after Aston Villa win vs Man United

Wayne Rooney couldn’t get enough of Morgan Rogers’ Aston Villa performance versus his beloved Manchester United on Sunday.

Aston Villa beat Manchester United 2-1 at Villa Park to claim a seventh Premier League win in a row, setting a new club record in the division.

Unai Emery‘s Villa are right in the mix for title contention after 17 games, with the Villans sitting just three points behind league leaders Arsenal.

Rogers scored a terrific brace for Villa, with both goals almost identical to each other, with the Englishman in a firm position for an England starting spot at next year’s World Cup.

Now, Rooney has broken down Rogers‘ display and highlighted exactly what he loved about the 23-year-old’s showing.

Wayne Rooney likes Morgan Rogers more than other England options

There have been conversations over Rogers starting ahead of Jude Bellingham at the World Cup, and the Villa man’s performance against United backed up his own case once more.

Not only did he score two world-class goals, but the attacking midfielder was quite literally doing everything for Emery.

The former Middlesbrough man truly ran the show at Villa Park, and only adds importance to Aston Villa‘s decision to tie him down on a deal until 2031 earlier this season.

His two goals say him rightly grab the headlines, but he also won 50 per cent of his ground duels and recovered the ball six times, while ending the match with a pass accuracy of 72 per cent.

While discussing Rogers’ impact for Villa in the game on BBC‘s Match of the Day, Rooney spoke about Rogers’ chances of making it into Thomas Tuchel’s starting lineups at the 2026 World Cup.

Rooney said: “I think Rogers has to be in pole position. He’s scoring goals, he’s quick, he’s strong, and he holds the ball. He’s doing everything right to try to ensure that the position is his.

I think Rogers is the one who gives more of a presence. I do seem to like him a little more than the other players.”

Rooney could not be more spot on in his assessment of Rogers.

But funnily enough, it wasn’t always smooth sailing for Rogers this season.

Rogers’ current form compared to the start of the season

Along with Villa’s poor start to this season, Rogers was also called out for poor displays.

Who would have thought that a few months later, the Englishman would be in conversation for being one of the best players in the world?

Emery deserves credit for getting the Villans back to their frightening best, but some of Rogers’ recent efforts have been entirely off his own back.

Going into a busy period of fixtures, Emery is going to have to manage Rogers’ minutes to ensure his star man stays fit for crucial games.
