Wayne Rooney argument pulled apart as ex-Aston Villa player reacts to comments seen online

Gabby Agbonlahor isn’t happy to see Wayne Rooney dismiss Aston Villa from the Premier League title race after beating Manchester United on Sunday.

Villa Park hosted Ruben Amorim’s team on 21 December, with two brilliant strikes from Morgan Rogers sealing the three points for the Villans.

Unai Emery has ignited hopes of winning the Premier League this season, winning 10 games in a row in all competitions.

After a poor start to the campaign, the Lions have won 11 of their last 12 league matches, and fans in B6 are rightly dreaming of big things.

Aston Villa have beaten Arsenal and Manchester City this season

Rooney doesn’t think Villa are in a title race because Arsenal and Manchester City are better than them.

That prompted Abgonlahor to remind the Man United icon that the Villans have beaten the Gunners and Pep Guardiola’s team at Villa Park in the current campaign.

As things stand, the Lions are just one point behind second-place Man City and three behind Arsenal, and it would certainly be foolish to count them out.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 22 December, Agbonlahor said: “I’ve seen a clip on social media this morning, it was Dion Dublin and Wayne Rooney on Match of the Day. Dublin says, rightly so, that yes, there’s a title race, Villa, you have to look at what they’ve done so far.”

The former Villa striker added: “And then they went on to Rooney and asked him the same question, and he said, ‘I don’t think they’re in a title race. I think Arsenal and Man City are better teams than them.’

“And everyone’s thinking to themselves, Villa comfortably beat Man City, tight game with Arsenal. They’ve already beaten the two teams you’re talking about, Mr Rooney. One point behind Man City and three behind Arsenal. So his argument is invalid.”

Aston Villa chance of winning Premier League emerge after win vs Manchester United

Villa may have an outside chance of winning the Premier League if Emery continues to make progress in B6.

Opta’s supercomputer has updated its predictions after Villa beat Man United, and the Lions are anticipated to finish third with around 71 points.

Arsenal are still the favourites to win the league title, with a 68.65 per cent chance, Man City have a 24.67 per cent chance, while the Villans sit at 5.27 per cent.

Fans in B6 will surely feel disrespected for not being taken seriously, and it will be interesting to see how they progress in the coming months, with Emery showing no signs of slowing down despite spending the least in the summer.
