Tim Sherwood compares Morgan Rogers to one of the greats after what he did vs Man United

Morgan Rogers’ performance against Manchester United has seen Tim Sherwood wax lyrical over the Aston Villa star.

Aston Villa ran out 2-1 winners over Man United on Sunday.

Rogers was the star of the show for Aston Villa against Man United, with the 23-year-old scoring two goals of the highest quality to keep the Villans in touch with Manchester City and Arsenal.

It was a performance that once again saw his name in lights, with Wayne Rooney backing Rogers to be in England’s starting XI for the 2026 World Cup.

However, displays such as that will only further see talk of Rogers leaving Aston Villa increase, as he’s sure to be on the transfer radars of world football’s biggest clubs.

Tim Sherwood drops major Morgan Rogers comparison claim

Following up his double against West Ham on 14 December with another brace against United, Rogers is now the first Aston Villa player since Dion Dublin in November 1998 to score two or more goals in back-to-back Premier League appearances, as per OptaJoe.

After his man-of-the-match performance against the Red Devils, Tim Sherwood raved over Rogers, and even compared him to one of English football’s greatest ever talents.

“He’s at a huge football club, and he’s really embraced it,” Sherwood said on Sky Sports News on Monday.

“He’s played for England and Thomas Tuchel loves him. I think he picks up positions on the pitch what are unmarkable. He knows why he’s moving to the left-hand side, why he drifts to the 10, when he needs to stand still.

“And at times, and this is the biggest compliment I can make him, he had a dribble against Arsenal at home and he looked like Paul Gascgoine. That is a massive compliment to anyone.

“He doesn’t play safe because he’s scared to do things, he tries it, and he’s got that audacity to go past people and he goes right to the heart of the defence. He’s having the best season of his life.”

Morgan Rogers is Aston Villa’s invaluable talisman

Against Man United, Rogers completed 72 per cent of his passes, had seven shots on goal, made eight defensive contributions, and yet he had the least amount of touches (33) of any outfield player to play 90 minutes, as per FotMob.

That just highlights how effective and impactful he is when he does get the ball, and shows that he doesn’t need much of an opportunity to stamp his authority on a game of football.

Sherwood’s comparison to Gascgoine regarding his fearlessness to try things on the pitch is proven when looking at his passing numbers too, with FotMob recording him as having as completed just 73.4 per cent of his passes in the Premier League this season, as well as a 5.9 per cent successful cross rate.

Similarly, Rogers is developing a reputation for himself as one of the best strikers of a football around, and as such, has a knack for scoring unbelievable goals.

With seven goals on the season so far, he’s not just exceeding his expected goals (xG) number of 2.86 per Sofascore, he’s destroying it.

So, while comparisons to Gascgoine are big and bold, there is clear evidence that would suggest he’s a very similar player to the England legend in a number of ways.
