Morgan Rogers equals stunning 27-year Aston Villa record after Man United heroics

The Premier League witnessed another sensational Morgan Rogers performance as Aston Villa secured a 2-1 win over Manchester United.

Rogers scored a brace for the second week running to give his side all three points and end Aston Villa’s worrying record against Man United.

For his first goal, the 23-year-old brought down the ball with a sublime touch before cutting inside Leny Yoro and whipping an incredible strike into the top right corner.

Remarkably, the Englishman’s second was a carbon copy, touching the ball beyond an outstretched Yoro and curling the ball past Senne Lammens.

Rogers dragged Aston Villa to victory for the second game running to move Unai Emery’s men three points behind Arsenal.

Morgan Rogers equals 27-year Aston Villa record

Last weekend, Rogers scored a brace against West Ham, which included a phenomenal strike from outside the box, repeating them heroics at Villa Park.

In doing so, the former Middlesbrough man became the first Aston Villa player to score 2+ goals in back-to-back Premier League appearances since Dion Dublin in November 1998 (three in a row).

Morgan Rogers stats vs Man United
90 minutes played
7 shots
2 goals
13/17 (76%) passes completed
1 foul drawn
6 recoveries

The England international has become the man for the big occasion, producing countless brilliant moments to win games for his team.

To put it into perspective, Rogers is the youngest player (aged 23 years and 148 days) to score 20+ Premier League goals since the start of last season.

It’s the sort of form that could earn him a starting place in Thomas Tuchel’s England team for the World Cup.

Paul Merson wowed by Morgan Rogers vs Man United

Jamie Carragher was amazed by Rogers against West Ham during his previous match-winning display, and Paul Merson waxed lyrical over his performance against the Red Devils.

Speaking on Sky Sports post-match, Merson said: “Teams win Premier Leagues, but you have to have X factors in your teams because sometimes the team does not work as a team and you have them off days, then you need your X factors and game changers and they win you games out of absolutely nothing.

“And that is what Rogers is at the moment, he has been absolutely outstanding the last 10 games or so. They were not outstanding, but they had a game-changer.”

Wayne Rooney has questioned whether Aston Villa can win the Premier League title, but if Rogers can stay fit and produce more world-class displays, there’s no reason they can’t keep up the pace with Arsenal and Manchester City.
