Wayne Rooney makes ‘incredible’ Aston Villa claim as he’s asked about Premier League title
Aston Villa are just three points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal after yet another comeback win and Wayne Rooney has given his take on their title chances.
On Sunday, Aston Villa beat West Ham United 3-2 at the London Stadium, despite going into the break 2-1 down.
Morgan Rogers scored a second-half brace to fire Unai Emery’s side to victory and keep their extraordinary recent run going.
Villa have now won nine games in a row across all competitions, leaving them third in the Premier League and the Europa League group phase.
Wayne Rooney gives Aston Villa ‘no chance’ in title race
Arsenal have been faltering in recent weeks, allowing the likes of Manchester City and Aston Villa to close the gap at the top of the Premier League.
There is now a gulf between third-placed Villa, on 33 points, and fourth-placed Chelsea, who currently have 28 points.
However, despite the current positions, former Manchester United and England striker Rooney doesn’t believe that Emery’s side have a realistic chance of challenging for the Premier League.
When asked if Villa are in the title race, Rooney said: “No, no. If we’re realistic.”
“What the manager is doing is incredible, and I think you have to give credit to the players as well. But in terms of a title race, there’s no chance they’re going to be above Man City or Arsenal.”
Wayne Rooney wrong to ignore Aston Villa’s form
Back in September, Aston Villa were sitting in the relegation zone without a single win from their first five games of the Premier League season.
Since then, Emery’s side have been near faultless, catapulting themselves back towards the top of the division.
Following their disastrous start, Villa have picked up 30 points from 11 games, the most out of any Premier League team in that period.
| Position | Team | Games | Points |
| 1 | Aston Villa | 11 | 30 |
| 2 | Man City | 11 | 27 |
| 3 | Arsenal | 11 | 26 |
Throughout those 11 matches, the Midlands giants have scored 24 goals, conceding just 12.
Aston Villa are the Premier League’s in-form team currently, and there is no reason at all why they shouldn’t be included in title race discussions.
