Rob Edwards now set for Villa Park return within weeks as Wolves make announcement
Rob Edwards’ first away match in charge of Wolves will see his side travel to Villa Park in the Premier League.
Edwards was linked with the Wolves vacancy for over a week before finally being announced as the new head coach on Wednesday.
Whilst Villa have been thriving ever since the arrival of Unai Emery in October 2022, Wolves have found themselves constantly battling with fears of relegation.
Edwards joins a team who are completely devoid of confidence since the sacking of Vitor Pereira, as they sit bottom of the Premier League and winless after 11 matches.
Both sides will meet on 30 November in a highly-contested affair that should be a baptism of fire for Edwards’ first away match in charge, with the new head coach returning to the ground where he started his playing career.
Former Villa player Rob Edwards will look to gain Win with Wolves on 30 November
The 42-year-old manager left Middlesbrough in contentious circumstances, leaving them when they were second in the Championship for a team that are completely disjointed at the bottom of the Premier League table.
It was never in doubt for Edwards, who featured 111 times in a Wolves shirt between 2004 and 2008.
But his playing days began in 1999, where he made nine appearances for Villa until leaving for their arch-rivals in 2004.
Edwards has only come up against Aston Villa twice as a head coach, when he was in charge of Luton for the 2023-24 season, and he lost both meetings with Emery.
Rob Edwards’ overall record against Aston Villa:
- Wins: 0
- Draws: 0
- Losses: 2
Aston Villa secured a 3-2 win away to Luton in March 2024, whilst they comfortably beat them 3-1 at Villa Park in November 2023.
Edwards is aiming to get his first positive result against Emery’s side, and Villa have perhaps been unlucky that they did not face their rivals earlier on in the season.
The last thing Emery will want is for Wolves to beat Crystal Palace on 22 October in Edwards’ first game in charge, as the former Luton manager looks to revive his drained squad of players.
Aston Villa have won six matches in a row at Villa Park, but their derby matches against Wolves are never straightforward.
Wolves match will prove to be a different test for Aston Villa
Villa are predicted to finish fifth in the Premier League, whilst Wolves are nailed on for relegation.
If this meeting were happening at any point in the season, Villa would feel relatively confident of picking up all three points.
Teams frequently get a resurrection in form when a new head coach walks through the door, and this could prove to be a tricky game on 30 November.
| Aston Villa | Stat | Wolves |
| 5 | Wins | 0 |
| 3 | Draws | 2 |
| 3 | Losses | 9 |
| 18 | Points | 2 |
| 6th | Premier League position | 20th |
Edwards will set his team up in a low block, and with pace out wide, they could cause some severe problems on the counter-attack
Aston Villa lost 2-0 to Wolves in their last meeting, and despite not suffering a home defeat to their opponents since 2021, the clash on 30 November will have an added level of intensity.
