Aston Villa backed to seal Igor Thiago transfer as Brentford talks underway ahead of January

Aston Villa have been backed to get a deal done for Brentford striker Igor Thiago in the January transfer window.

The Villans have enjoyed a mini-resurgence in the Premier League of late, after they initially failed to find the back of the net throughout their opening four league games of the season.

Ollie Watkins has struggled for Aston Villa of late, and he still has just one goal to his name from 15 appearances in all competitions so far this term.

The 29-year-old’s form is a source of concern for Unai Emery and Co. at the moment, and they could be about to act on that ahead of the January window.

Aston Villa told to trust Brentford production line

Aston Villa are interested in signing Igor Thiago from Brentford in January, and both them and Tottenham have made contact with the Bees about his availability.

The Brazilian has notched seven goals from his opening 11 appearances in all competitions this season, after an injury-hit campaign last term limited him to just eight appearances in his debut in English football.

Keith Andrews’ side have developed some excellent strikers in recent years with the likes of Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbeumo, and Thiago could be the next to go on to bigger and better things, with talks underway about his current status.

Ex-Villa scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – believes that the B6 outfit should trust Brentford’s production line and make a move for Thiago.

“If you’re going to bring in a player from Brentford, then they invariably seem to work out,” King said.

“Watkins is certainly not a traditional centre forward, whereas this boy from Brentford, he’s a bit of a battering ram type, and he can finish.

“Watkins came on against Maccabi Tel Aviv, and it wasn’t a great game to come into. But, I’m still waiting this season to see him produce at the level that he did last season.”

Only Erling Haaland is outscoring Igor Thiago in the Premier League

Watkins’ struggles at Aston Villa this term have come as a major surprise, as he has effectively guaranteed goals at Premier League level in recent years.

However, the second city outfit’s latest target is firmly up among the best hitmen in the division so far this term.

Thiago’s tally of six league goals from the opening 10 games can only be bettered by Erling Haaland, whose jaw-dropping form has him standing in a league of his own yet again.

Thiago then ranks alongside the likes of Danny Welbeck and Jean-Philippe Mateta as the top flight’s joint-second most prolific strikers.
