Evann Guessand has nearly cost Aston Villa, he must come off at HT vs Liverpool

Evann Guessand has struggled for Aston Villa once again away to Liverpool.

Villa have travelled to face Liverpool at Anfield and have gone in at the break 1-0 down after an Emi Martinez shocker allowed Mohamed Salah to score.

Things could have been so different, as ahead of signing a new Villa contract, Morgan Rogers hit the post, so nearly giving the away side the lead within five minutes.

Premier League Player of the Month nominee Matty Cash has also come close to scoring with a deflected effort that was well saved by Giorgi Mamardashvili.

It is Guessand who has caused issues for the Villa backline and should be withdrawn by Unai Emery on Merseyside.

Evann Guessand nearly cost Aston Villa vs Liverpool

Guessand has struggled for form at Aston Villa since his big-money move from OGC Nice over the summer.

The 24-year-old hasn’t lived up to expectations, having scored just one goal in all competitions, with that one being a scrappy strike away to Go Ahead Eagles.

That hasn’t looked like changing at Anfield with the Ivory Coast international missing a clear-cut chance from the edge of the box.

The winger opted to use his right foot, despite it being a clear opportunity for a left-footed effort as the ball rolled across the edge of the box to him.

That moment was only made worse when Guessand took down Cody Gakpo on the edge of the box with a totally unnecessary challenge.

Dominik Szoboszlai took aim and forced Martinez into a great save, but things could have been so much worse for the away side.

Guessand must be hooked by Aston Villa vs Liverpool

Guessand has lost the most duels on the pitch with four, summing up just how poor he has been throughout the opening 45 in L4.

That isn’t helped by his 0 per cent shot accuracy and dribble success rate, which have been largely indicative of his Villa spell so far.

The Ivorian hasn’t helped out defensively either, as he usually would, after failing to chip in with a single tackle or interception at Anfield.

With Jadon Sancho and Donyell Malen on the bench, there are plenty of better options for Emery to choose from at halftime.
