Odds slashed on ex-Aston Villa manager taking charge at Rangers after Russell Martin sack developments

Rangers could look to former Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard to turn their fortunes around after a historically bad start to the season.

Gerrard left Villa Park in 2022, less than a year after Aston Villa hired him from Rangers to replace Dean Smith.

At the time, former Rangers and Villa right-back Alan Hutton admitted he wanted Gerrard to stay at Villa Park.

The former Liverpool midfielder has since managed at Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, but left them at the start of this year and has remained available since.

Gerrard has already been linked with a return to Rangers, with bookmakers pricing him as a 7/2 front-runner earlier this month.

Now, the odds of a Gerrard move to Ibrox have been slashed amid developments in Glasgow.

Steven Gerrard increasingly likely to head to Rangers

Russell Martin may have won his first league game of the season at the weekend when Rangers beat Livingston in the Scottish Premiership.

However, he’s not safe, with Rangers fans still booing him despite their victory in West Lothian.

With Gerrard, some Gers fans might not be happy about how he left Ibrox. But younger fans will no doubt look at the ex-Aston Villa boss as the only manager to bring them any success in more than a decade.

Back in 2021, the former Liverpool captain won the Scottish Premiership title with the Gers and prevented Celtic from achieving 10-in-a-row.

A contrast to his time at Villa, where the Englishman struggled for the most part.

Who else is in the running for Rangers job?

Gerrard is the second favourite for the Rangers job right now.

Former Everton and Burnley manager Sean Dyche is the current 11/4 favourite, with Danny Rohl (5/1) and Gary O’Neil (6/1) also among the front-runners.

Jose Mourinho was also tentatively linked after he left Fenerbahce but he’s since return to Portugal to take charge at Benfica.

Gerrard ultimately struggled at Aston Villa and was replaced by Unai Emery, who has since taken the Midlands club back to the Champions League and is battling among the big boys in the Premier League.
