Troy Deeney completely wrong with what he said about Morgan Rogers and Aston Villa fans

Aston Villa breathed life into a flagging campaign by starting their Europa League quest with a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth.

John McGinn fired home the winner for Aston Villa in a match that saw both sides evenly contested.

Although Villa secured the win, Morgan Rogers disappointed once more for Unai Emery’s side.

The PFA Young Player of the Year was ironically cheered when he completed a pass in the 88th after a poor display on the night.

Troy Deeney says Rogers doesn’t have enough credit in the bank

Rogers has not registered a goal or an assist this season, prompting Emery to make a decision about his place in Aston Villa’s starting XI.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Troy Deeney was critical of the 23-year-old’s start to the season.

When asked whether Rogers has credit in the bank to deflect any criticism directed towards him, Deeney said: “He’s had one good season.

“You have credit in the bank when you have more than one good season.

“When you have a good season, everyone has said how great you are, the second season is when you start going into games saying, how do you stop him?”

Rogers has featured in every game for Villa this season, and Emery has shown confidence in him despite the midfielder’s struggles.

Rogers has plenty of credit in the bank

After being named the PFA Young Player of the Year for the 2024/25 season, the midfielder has plenty of credit in the bank for that alone.

He became the first player outside the big six to win the award since James Milner in the 2009/10 season.

Flashing back to the season prior – when he completed his January move to Villa – Rogers was an integral part of a Middlesbrough side that strung together a marvellous six-game win streak early in the season.

Another point to be noted is his performance for the England national team.

After demolishing Serbia 5-0 in Belgrade, Rogers was pivotal as an attacking midfielder and showed his ability to take the ball on the half turn and create chances for his forwards.

Aston Villa’s start to the season has been a dull one.

On top of Rogers’ poor performances, the likes of Ollie Watkins, Donyell Malen and others have also disappointed.

Once Villa begin to find their feet again, Rogers will find his groove and once more be an integral part of a fully flowing Unai Emery side.

For now, it feels extremely harsh of Birmingham City fan and ex-Blues striker Deeney to be suggesting he is fair game for criticism from the stands.
