Jamie Carragher shares what he expects from Aston Villa after Emery’s ‘lazy’ jibe
Aston Villa were called out by Unai Emery after their disappointing draw against 10-man Sunderland last time out.
Villa have struggled at the start the season, scoring one goal in five games, a run that has seen them pick up three draws and two losses from their first five Premier League games.
Emery has been very vocal on what he expects from his players, and is unimpressed with the Villans’ start to the season.
However, fans will be hoping that a win is due, and welcoming Fulham to Villa Park could be the game that sparks their season into life.

Carragher expects Villa response
Unai Emery slammed his players as “lazy” last weekend after a 1-1 draw away at the Stadium of Light.
But speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, former Liverpool defender Carragher – who alongside Gary Neville predicted a 1-0 win against Fulham this weekend – thinks Villa will be desperate to muster a response.
Carragher said: “He called them lazy, they’ve got to be at it.”

Aston Villa look for European respite
Aston Villa fans are understandably not happy with the start to the season, and Emery walking down the tunnel before full-time of Villa’s draw with Sunderland.
One of Villa’s key problems has been their lack of goalscoring threat and Emery has been accused of not backing Ollie Watkins despite him starting all five league games this season.
Aston Villas statistics so far:
- 20th in goals scored per match- 0.20
- 6th in goals conceded per match- 1.00
- 11th in big chances missed- 6
Aston Villa face Bologna in the Europa League in a match Emery and the fans will be hoping will offer a bit of respite from their flagging domestic form.
Villa’s opponents on Thursday have not had the best start to their season as they sit in 11th after four games, scoring three and conceding three.
A timely victoy may provide the shot in the arm they need to get things going once again.
