Unai Emery looks doomed at Aston Villa after nine-word sack update

Unai Emery could be coming to the end of his tenure as Aston Villa manager.

Forget the clashes against Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Bayern Munich in the Champions League; Villa’s Europa League tie against Bologna on Thursday is arguably the biggest game Emery has taken charge of at Villa.

With reports suggesting Emery has fallen out with multiple key players at Villa, on top of their horrendous start to the season, the Spaniard is in desperate need of a win to turn things around at Villa Park.

However, Fabrizio Romano’s latest update regarding Emery will not fill him and the Villa fanbase with much hope that the manager’s long-term future is still in B6.

Fabrizio Romano shares update on Unai Emery’s Aston Villa future

With Monchi leaving Villa in recent days, Emery could be the next one to follow him out the door in what would be an unimaginable shakeup at the club just a few weeks ago.

Writing in his GIVEMESPORT newsletter on 24 September, Romano provided the latest update regarding Emery’s status as manager.

“At the moment, everything is under control with Unai,” he said.

The “at the moment” part suggests this could be subject to change and is far from the most reassuring update Emery could have received.

With Emery also labelling his players lazy after the Sunderland game, every sign points towards the 53-year-old’s departure being a matter of when and not if.

Unai Emery should only be sacked under one circumstance this season

Unless near the backend of the season, Villa are in real threat of going down, they should stand by their manager.

Any player who has had a falling out with Emery should be sold, no matter what they have previously done for the club and Emery should be given adequate time to rebuild if he chooses to stick around.

Managers of Emery’s calibre are like gold dust and are far more important than any individual player.

Too often in modern-day football, people expect progress year in and year out.

If Villa limp to a mid-table finish after playing in European competitions for the past two seasons, whilst being on the edge of their third consecutive European campaign, every single Villa fan would have bitten your hand off for this a decade ago.

With Villa’s squad ageing, the wheels were always going to fall off eventually, and now the club must do the right thing and allow Emery to rebuild them once again.
