Premier League make announcement after Sunderland vs Aston Villa controversy

Aston Villa’s away clash against Sunderland hasn’t been without controversy.

Villa have travelled to face Sunderland on 21 September with the hope of securing their first Premier League win of the season under Unai Emery.

There were initial fears of the clash between Sunderland and Villa being postponed due to adverse weather conditions, but those were subsided at the Stadium of Light.

Instead, chances have been at a minimum in the north east, and frustration has continued to revolve around the away side, despite the return of Boubacar Kamara for Villa.

This hasn’t stopped controversy from ensuing against the Black Cats, with the Premier League now speaking out after the latest incident.

Reinildo sent off for Sunderland vs Aston Villa

Villa are coming off the back of a defeat against Brentford and are in desperate need of a bit of luck to help get their season up and running.

The performance level might not be quite there, but there will be hopes of finally picking up a positive result against the Mackems.

This comes after Reinildo was sent off for kicking out at Matty Cash after a poorly timed challenge from the Villa right-back.

The Poland international clattered into the versatile defender, who was far from impressed with the attempted tackle and showcased that in SR5.

Referee Sam Barrott showed the Mozambican a straight red card, with the Premier League match centre speaking out via X to confirm the decision.

Their statement reads: “The referee’s call of red card to Reinildo for violent conduct was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the contact on Cash deemed to be a clear violent action with his studs.”

Aston Villa must now win at Sunderland

Not only are the Villans up against a newly promoted side, they’re against 10 men.

This should be more than enough of an advantage for a Europa League outfit to go and grab all three points in the Premier League.

That isn’t how the story has unfolded for Villa so far this season, but it is time to stop feeling sorry for ourselves and instead show a bit of grit for the first time in a long time.

It will certainly be interesting to see who, if anyone, is going to step up and take the game by the scruff of the neck, but there are no excuses for not winning anymore.
