Marcus Rashford scenes ‘reflect badly on himself’ after Aston Villa rejection

Marcus Rashford left Aston Villa in the summer after his loan spell with the club came to an end.

Despite Unai Emery’s side being linked with a permanent move for the winger over the summer, a deal never came to fruition, and Rashford ultimately joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester United.

This was a disappointing blow for Villa supporters, who wanted to see Rashford back at Villa Park on a permanent basis.

Whilst the 27-year-old undoubtedly possesses incredible talent, his patchy form over the course of his career has been rightly criticised.

Andy Dunn questions Marcus Rashford after scenes against Newcastle

Rashford bagged a brace for Barcelona against Newcastle in the Champions League in midweek, with his second strike likely to be a contender for the best goal scored in the competition this season.

This incredible display won many plaudits, but The Mirror’s chief sports writer Dunn had a different opinion.

Dunn claimed that Rashford’s performance at St James’ Park highlighted either his lack of application at Manchester United during the backend of his stint there or showcased Ruben Amorim’s inability to get the best out of his players.

In page 65 of the Sunday Mirror on 21 September, Dunn wrote: “Depending on what camp you are in, Marcus Rashford’s brilliance at St James’ Park either reflects badly on the player himself – showcasing he has not applied himself properly in recent times at Manchester United – or on Ruben Amorim for not getting a tune out of the player.

“Either way, one thing is for sure. With the squad size for the World Cup finals likely to be 26, Rashford is a luxury choice that Thomas Tuchel cannot ignore.”

Rashford’s performance against Newcastle was his first real statement of intent since arriving at the Spanish giants, with the former Villa man playing just 162 minutes across Barcelona’s first four La Liga matches.

Marcus Rashford could potentially still end up at Villa

If Rashford underwhelms during his stint at Barcelona, Villa could ultimately move to secure his services if they do not opt to make the England international’s move to Spain permanent.

Signing Rashford permanently was also going to be a difficult task this summer, especially when considering that Barcelona were sniffing around the player.

Monchi and Co. should be on alert next summer if Rashford once again becomes available, as the Villans could offer the winger one final career lifeline after he seemingly rejected them this summer.
