Chris Sutton shares ‘bitterly disappointed’ reaction after ‘terrible’ moment in Aston Villa vs Sunderland

Chris Sutton was far from impressed as Aston Villa drew 1-1 with Sunderland.

The search for a first three points of the season carries on for Villa after failing to beat Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on 21 September.

This was despite the Black Cats’ player disadvantage after Reinildo was sent off for Sunderland for violent conduct in the first half.

Unai Emery’s side were unable to make the most of this situation, with the likes of Morgan Rogers struggling for Villa against Sunderland.

With all that being said, former Villa striker Sutton has spoken out to share his disappointment about one particular moment away from Villa Park.

Chris Sutton slams Robin Roefs for Sunderland

There was a general lack of attacking impetus from the Villans with Ollie Watkins, Emi Buendia and Evann Guessand struggling for Villa against Sunderland.

As a result, it felt as if the barren run in front of goal was going to continue for the away side against the newly promoted outfit.

Fortunately, this wasn’t the case as Matty Cash opened the scoring with an effort from range, which blasted into the net.

This looked to be a top strike from the Poland international, but on second viewing, it appeared that Sunderland keeper Roefs could have done much better.

It is fair to say that this was the opinion of Sutton live on Sky Sports Main Event as he shared his belief that the Dutchman will be frustrated at his own keeping.

He said: “My initial reaction is that Robin Roefs will be bitterly disappointed. Maybe there’s movement on the ball, but he gets a good hand on that.

“He cuts across the ball, Matty Cash, there’s all sorts of swerve on it. It’s a terrible goalkeeping error. Matty Cash won’t care. Aston Villa won’t care.”

Matty Cash forced the mistake for Aston Villa

There is one thing that Emery doesn’t like, and that is long-range strikes.

It seems now that his policy on this could soon change, considering that it has given Villa their first Premier League goal of the season.

The right-back hit the target, and sometimes that is all you need to do in the hope of finding the back of the net.

That is exactly what Cash is, and ultimately, if he hadn’t been brave and taken a risk, Villa would have likely gone without a goal or fallen to defeat again.

Maybe, in upcoming fixtures, these sorts of efforts could be utilised in order to get the Villans back on a positive track in B6.
