Aston Villa player ratings vs Sunderland: Emi Buendia shocker, 3/10 flops again

Aston Villa once again failed to perform and managed just a point away at Sunderland.

Villa travelled to face Sunderland on 21 September and struggled to create meaningful chances in yet another largely frustrating performance under Unai Emery.

Despite welcoming Boubacar Kamara back into the side at Sunderland, the atmosphere around the Villans truly didn’t change away from Villa Park.

That was until Matty Cash smashed home the opener with a long-range effort that certainly caught out Robin Roefs in the Mackems’ net.

This came over 30 minutes after Reinildo was sent off for Sunderland after the defender kicked out at the Poland international in the first half.

The lead wasn’t to last as Wilson Isidor went on to score the equaliser for the hosts after Tyrone Mings played the Frenchman on side in crazy fashion.

In what was yet another tired performance from the claret and blue outfit, Villa News rates each player’s performance out of 10.

The Frenchman is far from flashy but certainly does his job when called upon and typically does it well.

That was certainly the case against the Black Cats, with the 25-year-old showcasing his best work defensively and with the ball at his feet.

This saw Kamara contribute with six defensive actions while also winning four duels throughout the clash in the north east, something which can only be seen as a positive.

All this while completing 40 passes proves just how important he is, regardless of what was yet another frustrating day for the travelling Villa fans.

Emi Buendia fails to justify Aston Villa start

It says a lot about where Villa are right now when you consider that Buendia was considered expendable in January and is now a regular starter.

That isn’t necessarily a slight against the Argentina international, but his inclusion is far from a step forward for the claret and blue outfit.

The 28-year-old had looked good previously against Crystal Palace, but was generally poor at the Stadium of Light.

This saw him lose seven duels, winning just 25 per cent of his ground duels while also failing to complete a single chance.

The fact that Emery hooked him with less than 60 minutes on the clock says a lot, just not the best of days for Buendia, on a frustrating day for Villa.
