Aston Villa face huge overhaul next summer as worrying stat revealed

Aston Villa have struggled so far this season and are yet to see their first win.

Unai Emery has had plenty of success since arriving at Villa Park in 2022, and Aston Villa missed out on a second consecutive Champions League campaign on the final day of the 2024/25 Premier League.

Morgan Rogers had a goal disallowed against Manchester United, which would have put the Villans in good standing.

However, they will have to adapt to the Europa League and could face some big changes next summer after what could be a tough campaign.

Aston Villa have the joint-oldest squad in the Premier League

Despite Villa’s current poor form, there is no doubt that they will get through it as they have experienced figures.

Emi Martinez showed leadership against Everton, as he put his summer transfer saga aside and guided the Villans to a much-needed clean sheet.

John McGinn and Tyrone Mings are other important figures at Villa Park, who can dig deep in more difficult times, such as now.

However, having older and more level-headed players on the pitch can have its drawbacks.

The Villans have the joint-oldest squad in the league alongside Newcastle United, with younger squads such as Arsenal and Manchester City able to rotate and keep the energy levels in their squads.

Aston Villa have six players who are more than 30 years old, with just three under-22s.

Their team is on average 4.1 years older than the youngest squad, which is Chelsea, who average at 24.4.

Sunday’s opponents Sunderland also have an average age of just 25, so it will be interesting to see how the fixture plays out.

Aston Villa face a huge overhaul in 2026

If Villa fans thought the changes at the club were aplenty in the summer, they could be in for another surprise in 2026.

Alongside the loan signings, Ross Barkley’s contract runs out next summer, with a further eight players’ contracts running out in 2027.

The average age of the squad means that they will need a refresh next summer, especially after losing key younger players over the summer.

Aston Villa lost plenty of energy in midfield when Jacob Ramsey was offloaded.

They have missed out on pace on the wings with Leon Bailey joining Roma and Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio returning to their parent clubs following their loans last season.

It would be a surprise to see key figures such as Emi Martinez leave Aston Villa next summer and be replaced by younger players as the Villans continue to change their transfer strategy.
