Aston Villa stopped John McGinn signing huge deal as lucrative contract offer details emerge

Aston Villa faced a fight to keep hold of their better assets in the summer transfer window.

Morgan Rogers was the subject of interest from Tottenham, but Villa wouldn’t entertain offers under £80million and were adamant on keeping the forward.

Unai Emery was forced to sell over the summer in order to comply with Profit and Sustainability rules, an ongoing issue at Villa Park.

John McGinn was subject to interest from Everton, but the Villa captain showed loyalty to the club he has guided from the Championship to the Champions League quarter-finals.

John McGinn had a four-year deal on the table from Premier League side

McGinn has become a key player at Villa in his seven years in the Midlands.

Therefore, it was a surprise to see that Everton was trying to pry him away from Emery during the summer.

Newcastle also reportedly showed interest in McGinn before they turned to Jacob Ramsey.

According to the Daily Mail [19 September], the midfielder had a four-year deal on the table this summer from at least one Premier League rival, but Villa would not sell.

The sides will likely have been Everton and Newcastle, who both had a lot more money than the Villans to spend over the summer.

McGinn currently has two years remaining on his existing contract, but amid interest from elsewhere, Aston Villa could try to tie him down to a new deal this season.

How much could John McGinn have earned elsewhere?

McGinn is currently on £120,000 a week with the Villans and is the highest-paid Scotland international.

With just two years remaining on his current deal, one eye will be on what happens to the midfielder next.

McGinn is Aston Villa’s ninth-highest-paid player, with Emiliano Martinez, who has disrupted Aston Villa, the highest paid on £150,000 a week.

The potential clubs that offered him a four-year deal will have likely been at least matching his current wage, while also offering long-term security, which he is now guaranteed at Villa Park.
