‘Disgusting’ – Manchester United told to sack high-profile figure over Aston Villa failure

Aston Villa endured a chaotic summer in terms of transfers.

Villa faced another summer of underperformance in the transfer market due to PSR issues for the second consecutive season, and their Premier League form has been hindered as a result.

Villa drew 0-0 at Everton on Saturday to remain the only side in England’s top seven tiers to fail to score a goal so far this season.

Unai Emery finally saw his side strike in the transfer market on the final day of the window, as Harvey Elliott, Victor Lindelof and Jadon Sancho all arrived on deadline day.

Emery almost saw one of his stars leave Villa Park at the end of the window.

Manchester United slammed for failure to sign Emi Martinez

Villa were seemingly close to losing Emi Martinez to Manchester United this summer, before the deal fell through.

Martinez had agreed personal terms with United in the final days of the transfer window, while Villa looked to replace him with Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

However, in a crazy turn of events, United then swooped in on deadline day to sign Lammens, meaning Martinez, despite saying goodbye to the Villa Park faithful at the end of last season, was forced to remain in the Midlands.

Lammens was named as a substitute in United’s 3-0 derby defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, and Andy Goldstein was not happy at the decision to move away from the World Cup winner.

Talking on TalkSPORT’s Drive show on Monday night, Man United fan Goldstein said: “Emi Martinez, that’s disgusting. Whoever is responsible for not getting that deal over the line, they need to be fired.”

Aston Villa were fortunate to keep Emi Martinez

Despite all the commotion over his future at the club, Martinez put in a stellar performance in Villa’s 0-0 draw at Everton, after being left out of Emery’s side for the defeat to Crystal Palace before the international break.

It is clear that the Argentine is still Villa’s best shot-stopper, and a deal for Lammens would have signalled an immeasurable downgrade that could have cost Emery’s side dearly.

Marco Bizot did well in Villa’s draw with Newcastle United on the opening day, but it is clear he is not a long-term solution should Martinez end up leaving in the near future.

United may still come back in for the 33-year-old, especially with Altay Bayindir’s poor performances in recent weeks, but Villa need to focus on their situation now.
