Unai Emery will be cursing PSR after Aston Villa failed to address key issue in transfer window

Aston Villa could still have the chance to sign a much-needed upgrade on Matty Cash in January.

The Aston Villa defence was very inconsistent throughout the majority of last season, which wasn’t helped by the long-term absence of Tyrone Mings due to injury.

Emiliano Martinez’s dedication to Aston Villa cannot be questioned following the summer transfer saga surrounding the Argentinian goalkeeper. He was excellent in the 0-0 draw away to Everton on Saturday.

Unfortunately, PSR regulations heavily restricted the business Unai Emery was able to do over the summer transfer window. It frustrated players as well, as Ezri Konsa voiced his thoughts on PSR.

Aston Villa needed to sign competition for Matty Cash

Cash has been a regular at right-back for the Villans since joining from Nottingham Forest, although the Poland international has often received intense scrutiny.

While Cash starred for Poland during the international break, his form at club level has been consistent, and this had led to speculation surrounding his future.

Nottingham Forest were linked with Cash during the summer but a move didn’t materialise. In the meantime, Villa should have been looking for someone to offer competition.

Villa have been linked with Denzel Dumfries, the powerful Inter Milan right back who has become one of Europe’s best defenders in recent years.

Unfortunately, the Midlands side have never made a strong pursuit for the Dutchman and that could have been a mistake.

It was reported recently that Dumfries is open to moving to England, so it feels like not pursuing the 28-year-old is a missed opportunity.

That is because Villa are competing across multiple fronts this term, including in the Europa League, and Emery could have done with competition at right-back.

Villa must go all out to sign Denzel Dumfries

Monchi needs to put everything together that is needed to sign Dumfries.

Dumfries has shown he is one of the best fullbacks in the world for several years now, and he could fit in perfectly into Emery’s style of football.

With Villa also yet to score in the league this season, it shows work is needed going forward, and Dumfries would certainly help after producing 17 goal involvements in all competitions last term.

Clearly, the summer window did not go to plan, but bringing in someone of Dumfries’ pedigree would be a real statement of intent to everyone else in the Premier League.
