Gabby Agbonlahor let down by ‘disappointing’ Aston Villa fans after what he saw at Villa Park

Aston Villa were absolutely shocking against Crystal Palace.

Villa welcomed Palace to Villa Park on Sunday and fell to yet another defeat against Oliver Glasner’s side in a 3-0 battering.

It once again appears that the German has Unai Emery’s number, although the Spaniard’s mind may have already been on deadline day ahead of Villa moves for Harvey Elliott, Jadon Sancho and Victor Lindelof.

With that being said, there was still little to no positivity to speak of after the third Premier League clash of the campaign.

Villa fans were noted for their chants against Emi Martinez, with more of their antics leaving Gabby Agbonlahor frustrated in B6.

Aston Villa fans flooded out of Villa Park vs Crystal Palace

Before this defeat against the Eagles, the claret and blue outfit had gone over a year without tasting defeat at Villa Park in the Premier League.

Prior to this, Villa’s defeat against Arsenal in August 2024 was the last time that Emery’s side didn’t secure at least a point from a clash in the Midlands.

As a result, the huge level of frustration and annoyance from supporters did come as a surprise to many on the terraces of the Holte End and beyond.

Supporters were seen slamming seats and kicking railings, among other things, representative of a different era of Villa Park, most recently the relegation era.

This was all seen before a mass exodus in B6, leaving the ground near empty before the full-time whistle eventually went after seven minutes of added time.

Agbonlahor was let down by the supporters’ attitude, something that he hasn’t seen for many seasons when attending matches in the Midlands.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 4 September, he said: “Crystal Palace just sat back, they frustrated Aston Villa. They were lacking that Harvey Elliott to get on the ball and make something happen.

“It’s the first game in about three years where the Villa fans had left really early, disappointing.”

Aston Villa fans show their fickle side once again

To have gone over a year without facing defeat in the Premier League at home should be enough for many fans to accept a defeat at some point.

Although the performance against Palace was certainly terrible and hugely frustrating, creating a toxic atmosphere certainly won’t help.

The atmosphere around Villa Park was reminiscent of the 2015/16 season, when relegation was on the cards for almost the whole campaign.

Back then, there was little reason for excitement, but nowadays, with Emery in charge, there is no reason for such a dismal and negative atmosphere.

Agbonlahor is right to call out supporters, and hopefully it is something that can change moving deeper into this year of Premier League action.
