MOTD show huge disrespect to Aston Villa with what happened after highlights v Newcastle
Aston Villa were let down by Match of the Day after their opening day goalless draw against Newcastle United.
Unai Emery’s side welcomed the Magpies to B6 on Saturday (16 August) and secured a point despite Ezri Konsa’s second-half red card.
It took a mammoth effort, but Villa managed to keep Newcastle out to see the game out at 0-0, in what has to be seen as a positive result in the circumstances.
That clearly wasn’t the mindset of the BBC, as their Villa Park coverage on Match of the Day was nothing short of disrespectful.

Match of the Day disregards Aston Villa
Despite the lack of clear-cut chances for either side in the Midlands, there were still some plus points to take away for the claret and blue outfit.
The performance of Marco Bizot on his Aston Villa debut was certainly well-received, while the likes of Tyrone Mings and Boubacar Kamara performed well.
Stat | Marco Bizot vs Newcastle |
Saves | 3 |
xG prevented | 0.64 |
High claims | 3 |
Recoveries | 12 |
With that being said, it did feel as if further signings are going to be needed for Emery, especially after his lack of changes throughout the clash.
This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to potential talking points from a Villa point of view after the full-time whistle against Eddie Howe’s side.
That certainly wasn’t the case from the perspective of Mark Chapman, Alan Shearer and former Birmingham City boss Wayne Rooney on Match of the Day (16 August).
The trio failed to mention the Villans at any stage, focusing instead on Newcastle’s performance somewhat before a lengthy conversation about Alexander Isak’s potential exit.
Given that the Magpies shared the points with Villa, there was no reason why either side was discussed more than the other.
This was hugely disappointing for the claret and blue faithful once again, especially with this old habit already coming up on the opening day of the season.
Aston Villa can work with outsider mentality
Having made just two signings at this stage of the summer, the general feeling around the Villans is strangely one of negativity.
With Evann Guessand being Villa’s only outfield addition, many believe that Emery’s squad has gotten weaker over the course of the summer.
This is bizarre given the level of quality already available in the squad, with the likes of Morgan Rogers only likely to get better moving forward.
With that mentality already set in people’s minds away from B6, it could be the perfect opportunity to adopt an underdog mindset at Villa Park.
Having a lack of expectation could prove to be the perfect catalyst for the rest of the campaign, something which has hampered the Villans throughout the modern era.
